UNSW Computing
UNSW is one of Australia's leading research and teaching universities. At UNSW, we take pride in the broad range and high quality of our teaching programs. Our teaching gains strength and relevance from our research activities and our international nature; UNSW has a strong regional and global engagement. In developing new ideas and promoting lasting knowledge we are creating an academic environment where outstanding students and scholars from around the world can be inspired to excel in their programs of study and research.
UNSW COMPUTING is the short name of the University of New South Wales School of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). The School has 789 students majoring in Undergraduate computing degrees, with over 220 Postgraduate Coursework students and 154 Higher Degree Research students.
UNSW COMPUTING focuses on solving deep technical problems in computing. It is well known in Open Source and Linux groups around the world, and many of our graduates have gone on to senior positions major international IT companies. See our special section on "Making a Difference". Our aim is to change Australia from being a heavy user of technology to a high producer of technology. We educate students to create technology for the future rather than just training them to use current technology, reducing the need for continual re-training.
Students choose to study computing for many reasons. Some have tinkered around with programming since they first laid hands on a computer when they were in barely able to talk, while others were high performing mathematics students with no computing experience, but who wanted a fun and interesting way to apply their knowledge. Whatever their motivations, few realised the full range of opportunities before they came to university.
While many people get jobs in the IT Industry after a six-month training course at a private college, only a few get the education to be able to lead the industry and create new hardware and software systems.
That is why at UNSW, the School of Computer Science and Engineering is a part of the Faculty of Engineering. Engineering is all about designing and creating new things for society, and this is especially exciting when applied to the world of computing. There are few other careers where people can design and build a product from scratch, or where a product is routinely used by millions of people around the world daily. Our students have worked on an incredibly diverse range of projects, from a better search-engine algorithm, to animating the lead character in an Academy Award winning movie, to the bionic eye, to an operating system used on tens-of-millions of new mobile phones per month. What could you create?
