UNSW Terminology

Semester

A 12 week instruction period. There are two main semesters each year (S1 & S2), along with a shorter summer semester during the recess, with limited course offerings.

Program

A collection of courses that leads to a degree, e.g. Bachelor of Engineering (Software).

Program Authority

The school or faculty which offers and administers a program, e.g. CSE or Faculty of Engineering.

Plan or Specialisation

A major or minor area of study within a Program, e.g. The eCommerce Plan in the Computer Science Program.

Course

A unit of assessment in a program that usually consists of lectures, tutorials, practical/laboratory work and a final examination (like "Subject") e.g. Computing?1.

Course Authority

The school which offers, administers and teaches a course e.g. CSE.

Units of Credit (UoC)

Every course in the University has a Unit of Credit value. Most computing Courses are 6 UoC. A standard load in a semester is 24 UoC.

CSE

The School of Computer Science & Engineering, also known as UNSW COMPUTING.
